This is Water

We are currently developing the World Premiere of This is Water, after a wonderful six-night workshop production in Fall 2022.

The Townies, Inc. and Precipitous Records are thrilled to announce a workshop production of the new play This is Water, written and performed by Rain Perry and directed by Townies, Inc. Executive Director Kim Maxwell. Austin, Texas, musician Mark Hallman provides musical accompaniment. Performances are Thursdays through Saturdays, October 13-22, 2022, at 8:00 PM at Kim Maxwell Studio, 226 W. Ojai Ave. #102, Ojai CA 93023. This is Water is made possible in part by a generous grant from the Ojai Arts Commission and the City of Ojai.

A sequel of sorts to Perry’s 2008 hippie memoir Cinderblock Bookshelves (also directed by Maxwell), This is Water wades into the fraught topic of the day. Perry explains: “I want to look back at my same childhood, but this time through the lens of race.”

A White Album, the record upon which This is Water is based, debuted at #11 on the Folk Music Chart and received rave reviews:

“delves into being white, and does it in a beautiful, unforgettable way.” – INDIE PULSE MUSIC

“A body of work with zero misfires. Hugely impressive.” – LONESOME HIGHWAY

“distill(s) complicated issues fraught with politics and passion through a prism of compassion and understanding – GLIDE MAGAZINE

A brave and unvarnished examination of race… I encourage all to seek out its beauty and challenge. – FERVOR COULEE
